Malaysia eyes esports supremacy with MOONTON partnership for Mobile Legends SEA Cup

Mobile Legends developer MOONTON Games announced on Friday (3 June) that they have partnered with Malaysia's Ministry of Youth and Sports and local esports initiative Esports Integrated (ESI) to host the Mobile Legends Southeast Asia Cup (MSC) 2022.

Malaysia will be hosting the MSC for the first time this year, with the tournament being held offline in the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre from 11 to 19 June.

The event features 12 of the best teams from the different Mobile Legends Pro Leagues (MPL) across Southeast Asia competing for their cut of the US$300,000 prize pool.

In a press conference held at the ESI Hub in Malaysia, MOONTON and the country's youth and sports ministry revealed that MSC 2022 will have '#SupremaSEA' as its theme and "help to catalyse a vibrant and inclusive esports ecosystem".

"Malaysia has produced many talented esports professionals who have flourished well in international and local competitions," said Dato Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu , Malaysia's Minister of Youth and Sports in a press release. "MSC 2022 will help to propel Malaysia's esports ecosystem to new heights, well in line with our vision as a vibrant esports hub to nurture our locals to become world-renowned esports athletes."

Fikri Rizal Mahruddin, MOONTON's marketing lead for the MPL Malaysia, added that the developer was excited to collaborate with the youth ministry and ESI to help strengthen the country's esports ecosystem.

"We have made several inroads with MPL Malaysia over the last few years, and are confident of our local athletes' ability to represent our nation for MSC 2022," said Fikri.

The list of participating teams at MSC 2022 include home teams TODAK and Orange Esports, RSG PH and Omega Esports from the Philippines, RRQ Hoshi and ONIC Esports from Indonesia, RSG SG and EVOS SG from Singapore, Impunity KH and See You Soon from Cambodia, Falcon Esports from Myanmar, and IDONOTSLEEP Esports from Thailand.

The tournament will be split into two phases: the Group Stage, taking place from 11 to 12 June, and the Playoffs, hosted from 14 to 19 June.

The Group Stage will see the 12 participating teams split into four groups of three teams each, where they will compete in a best-of-two single round robin to determine the Top 2 teams from each group that will advance to the Playoffs.

Meanwhile, the Playoffs will be a double-elimination bracket.

MSC 2022 will see the tournament's return to offline competition after last year's iteration, which was won by Filipino team Execration, was held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2017, the MSC was previously hosted offline in Jakarta, Indonesia and Manila, Philippines.
