Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has apologised for breaching Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures (SOPs) last Saturday while distributing Ramadan and Hari Raya donations in Langkawi, Kedah.

The Langkawi MP said he was informed he did not record his body temperature before entering Surau Tsunami Batu Arang, Kuala Terang, Kuah, and as such, had breached SOPs.

"This is a mistake. This should not have happened. I apologise for not following SOPs.

"I will accept actions under the related laws," Mahathir said in a statement today.

The nonagenarian also reminded the people of the dangers of Covid-19 and that it can infect any person regardless of their status or location.

"SOPs must be followed by all because it can prevent the virus from spreading," he said.

Earlier this month, former premier Najib Abdul Razak was fined RM3,000 for failing to register his presence at Restoran Nasi Ayam Hainan Chee Meng in Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, and also for not scanning his body temperature when entering the premises.

Meanwhile, Langkawi district police chief Shariman Ashari confirmed that police had reviewed a video of Mahathir uploaded onto the Facebook page of former premier Najib Abdul Razak and determined that the incident occurred on the morning of May 8 at the Surau Raudhatul Jannah, Kuala Teriang, Langkawi.

The video appeared to show the Mahathir failing to scan his MySejahtera app and taking his temperature, said Shariman.

"As such the case will be investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code for the offence of committing a negligent act likely to spread infection of any disease dangerous to life and Regulation 16 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within infected local areas) 2021," said Shariman.
