Singapore-based esports tournament organiser Cyberathlete announced on Tuesday (11 May) that it will be hosting a Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) tournament for college-level players, called the Cyberathlete Collegiate Mobile Legends Series, featuring a US$250,000 grand prize.

The Cyberathlete Collegiate Mobile Legends Series in Southeast Asia will kick off with qualifiers for participating countries from May to August, with the top teams from each country then competing to become one of eight salaried teams to enter the event's seasonal play.

At the conclusion of the series' third season in November next year, the four top-ranked collegiate teams from Southeast Asia will get their chance to compete for a grand prize of US$250,000 against other collegiate squads from around the world in the World Collegiate Finals in December 2022.

The series' current qualifying country partners include Singapore's Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA) with support from Singapore Esports Association (SGEA), E-Stars Nation from Malaysia, National Esports Federation of Philippines (NESFP), and Ligagame Esports from Indonesia, with Cyberathlete announcing more to come.

"We are really excited to kick the series off in Southeast Asia, where Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has met with massive success. But more importantly, we are proud to be putting students on a path that will allow them to be highly competitive in collegiate esports while remaining engaged with their academic commitments," Cyberathlete CEO Scott Valencia said in a press release.

"Beyond the success of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang M2 World Championship, which has reached over 100 million views for the professional esports industry, Moonton also places strong emphasis on the collegiate market as well," added Michael Lin, Esports Marketing Manager for MLBB developer Moonton Games.

"Through our 'Esports for Everyone' programme, we are excited to be part of Cyberathlete's ground-breaking initiative for the collegiate market,"

MLBB continues to be one of the most popular esports titles in Southeast Asia, with most of the MLBB Professional Leagues (MPL) across the region in the midst of their seventh season.

Earlier this month, EVOS Legends won the championship of Season 7 of MPL Indonesia while EVOS SG were crowned the champions of the inaugural season of MPL Singapore.
