Berlin to host VALORANT Champions Tour Stage 3 Masters in September

VALORANT developer Riot Games announced in a media preview event held on Wednesday (5 May) that the Stage 3 Masters tournament of the VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) will be hosted in Berlin, Germany in September.

Masters Berlin will take place in the Verti Music Hall from 9 to 19 September and will be third and final Masters tournament of the 2021 VCT after the Stage 2 Masters tournament in Reykjavík, Iceland later this month.

While Masters Reykjavík features just 10 of the best VALORANT teams from all across the world, the field for Masters Berlin will be expanded to include 16 squads who will try to qualify through a series of regional Challengers tournaments.

The teams competing in Masters Berlin will be competing for their share of VCT points that will determine which squads will move on to the VALORANT Champions tournament in December, where VALORANT's first-ever world champions will be crowned. The winning team of Masters Berlin will notably be receiving a direct seed to the VALORANT Champions tournament.

"We couldn’t be more excited to take Masters to Berlin. The level of competition in Europe continues to be one of the highest globally, as we had more than 900 teams participate in qualifiers across the region," Whalen Rozelle, Senior Direct of Esports at Riot Games, said during the developer's media preview event.

Riot added that they are also exploring the possibility of having a live audience in attendance at Masters Berlin should the German government allow for it.

"The safety of our players and staff will of course remain our top priority but it’s something we’re definitely exploring for the event. There’s nothing quite like the energy of competing in front of an audience of excited fans. There’s a chance it could happen in Berlin but we’re gonna let the local authorities and experts guide us on that one," said Rozelle.

With Masters Berlin still four months away, VALORANT esports fans have their eyes set on Iceland for Masters Reykjavík, which will be in the Laugardalshöll indoor sporting arena from 24 to 30 May.

Seven out of the 10 teams competing in the tournament have already been determined, namely Sentinels and Version1 from North America, Team Liquid and Fnatic from Europe, Crazy Raccoon from Japan, NUTURN Gaming from South Korea, and X10 Esports from Southeast Asia.

Brazil and Latin America will determine who will represent them in Iceland once their respective Challengers tournaments conclude on 9 May.

Masters Reykjavík will notably be VALORANT's first esports event to feature live international competition and is the second of two back-to-back tournaments hosted by Riot Games in Iceland, with the first being League of Legends' Mid-Season Invitational from 6 to 23 May.
